Embu County government embarked on an ambitious modernization of a Disaster Management Centre aimed at addressing distress calls across the county.

Located in Embu town, the center will consist of a modern fire station, hydrants, emergency staff accommodation facilities, a Training Centre as well as hosting a newly created disaster management directorate.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony in Embu town yesterday, Governor Martin Wambora said the county government has set aside Kshs 15 million for the first phase of the project.

This initiative will go a long in responding to disasters and emergencies as and when they arise” the governor said.

The governor noted that it is vital for Embu County to be prepared to face challenges to minimize the impact of disasters on people and livelihoods.

While lauding the County’s fire and enforcement department, the governor noted that there was a level of commitment by the two departments to undertake disaster preparedness activities.

It is important to develop standard procedures for multiple types of disasters so that all people will benefit from the same levels of preparation. Once developed, these procedures should be updated regularly to reflect key learning and changes to the internal and external environment”  the governor said.

He pledged to allocate more resources and ensure better preparedness and a stronger response.
